Austria's 96th-minute equaliser sends unbeaten Iran out of World Cup

An injury-time header by Sasa Kalajdzic salvaged a 3-3 draw and denied Iran a historic first knockout-place, leaving the Asian side to exit in cruel fashion.

With the final meaningful act of the World Cup group stage, Austria’s Sasa Kalajdzic rose to head a last-ditch equaliser against Algeria and simultaneously ended Iran’s hopes of reaching the round of 32 for the first time. For four minutes of stoppage time in Kansas City, after Riyad Mahrez had put Algeria 3-2 ahead, Iran were virtually through. Kalajdzic’s goal, scored in the 96th minute, meant the match finished 3-3, sending both Austria and Algeria into the knockout rounds and leaving Iran to absorb an elimination that was as bitter as it was delayed.

Iran’s own destiny had slipped from their grasp moments earlier in Seattle. Facing Egypt in their final Group G match, a stoppage-time winner by Shoja Khalilzadeh was disallowed for offside after a VAR review showed his toe beyond the last defender. Captain Mehdi Taremi had missed a first-half penalty and a header later hit the crossbar. The 1-1 draw, their third of the tournament after stalemates with Belgium and New Zealand, earned a third point but left them dependent on a winner emerging from the Austria–Algeria fixture in Group J.

That contest became an agonising vigil for the Iran camp. With both sides aware that a draw would likely secure progress as runners-up and a best third-place finisher, the game meandered through traded goals—Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer for Austria, Rafik Belghali and Mahrez for Algeria—until late chaos intervened. When Mahrez struck again in the 93rd minute, the arithmetic flipped: Austria were heading out, Iran were in. But Austria threw everything forward and Kalajdzic met a deep cross with a header that looped into the net, restoring parity and flipping the tables back.

Iran’s campaign had already been shaped by geopolitical friction between Tehran and Washington. The squad was based in Tijuana, Mexico, and allowed into the United States only on match days under strict visa timeframes—arrangements captain Taremi called a “disaster” and coach Amir Ghalenoei described as oppressive. After the Egypt match, the players left a handwritten note in their Seattle dressing room, a plea for fairness that seemed to anticipate the dreaded ‘biscotto’. “Fair play is not just a rule, it is the soul of the game,” it read, alongside a reference to 168 victims of a U.S. airstrike in Minab.

Iran exit the tournament unbeaten, a statistical anomaly for a side that departs at the group stage. Austria advance to face Spain in Los Angeles on 2 July, while Algeria meet Switzerland the same day in Vancouver. For Iran, a seventh World Cup ended with three draws and a four-minute window in which knockout football seemed, then was not, theirs.
