Fire at Algiers children’s home kills at least 11, injures 19

At least eleven people died and nineteen others were injured when a fire swept through a state-run foster care facility in the Mohammadia district of Algiers in the early hours of Thursday, according to Algeria’s civil protection department. Firefighters were called to the scene at around 03:30 local time and were still working to extinguish the blaze more than three hours later.
Officials have not disclosed the ages or identities of those killed, but several Algerian news outlets reported that the dead were children. The civil protection department said ten of the injured suffered burns of varying severity, two were treated for acute respiratory distress, and seven were in a state of psychological shock. Five residents with special needs were evacuated to safety.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited victims at the Zéralda burns hospital and the Mustapha Pacha hospital in the capital, state television reported. The civil protection department deployed multiple fire engines and ambulances, along with specialist rescue teams, to the site. One local news report noted that no municipal or regional officials were present during the initial rescue operation.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. Algeria has been experiencing a heatwave, and the AFP news agency reported that nearly 1,000 fires had been recorded across the country in the preceding week. The civil protection department described the death toll as provisional and said an investigation was under way.
