Widespread Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast from Indonesia to Iran
Meteorological agencies across Asia and the Middle East warn of unsettled conditions on Tuesday, with heavy showers in Sumatra and Java, cooling temperatures in the Gulf, and thunderstorm alerts across northern Iran.
Viewed from Jakarta, the most expansive weather story on Tuesday will be the near-blanket of rain expected to fall across the Indonesian archipelago. The national meteorology agency BMKG has forecast that most of the country will be lashed by precipitation, with the island of Sumatra particularly exposed. Medan, Pekanbaru, Bengkulu and Palembang are all on alert for light rain, while Padang and Tanjung Pinang face the sharper threat of thunderstorms. Bandar Lampung, by contrast, is expected to be shrouded in fog. On Java, the picture is more fragmented: Semarang and Surabaya should see light rain, while Bandung and Serang are likely to remain overcast. The capital Jakarta itself sits at the centre of a minor forecasting divergence, with some bulletins predicting light rain and others insisting on a day of unbroken thick cloud. Depok, immediately south of the capital, is tipped to stay cloudy until a clear evening, and Cirebon on Java’s north coast is forecast to be sunny all day, though residents have been warned of potentially strong winds.
Further east, the patchwork continues. In the planned new capital region of East Kalimantan, the day is expected to be marked by haze and smoke, while Sorong in Papua Barat Daya will see fog blanketing two districts and cloud persisting elsewhere. The Jabodetabek megacity corridor—Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi—is forecast to oscillate between clear-cloudy and thick cloud, with the possibility of light to moderate rain concentrated in the Bogor highlands. Temperatures across Java will range from a relatively cool 20°C in the hills to 33°C in the lowlands, with humidity levels typical of the early dry-season transition.
Shifting the lens to the Middle East, a different but equally unsettled pattern emerges. The UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology expects temperatures to drop on Tuesday under generally fair but occasionally dusty skies. Low clouds will gather over northern areas, and winds of 10 to 25 kilometres per hour—gusting to 40—will stir dust, particularly in the west of the Arabian Gulf, where waves will become choppy. In Iran, the warning is starker. Meteorological officials have flagged afternoon thunderstorms, lightning and sudden strong winds for a string of northern and northwestern provinces, including West and East Azarbaijan, Ardabil and the Caspian coastal belt. Dust storms are also expected to sweep across the northeast, east and the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains, as well as parts of the central plateau. The Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Sea of Oman will be rough for the next five days, while the Caspian Sea will be turbulent for three.
Analysts in London note that the simultaneous activation of convective weather across the Indian Ocean rim and the Iranian plateau is consistent with the seasonal push of the intertropical convergence zone northwards, combined with a mid-latitude trough digging into western Asia. For Indonesia, the rains arrive even as the dry season is supposed to be taking hold, a reminder that the archipelago’s equatorial climate defies simple seasonal binaries. In the Gulf and Iran, the late-spring instability brings the familiar hazards of reduced visibility from blowing dust and the risk of flash flooding in mountainous terrain. Travel and logistics operators across both regions will be watching the radar closely, as the unsettled Tuesday gives way to what forecasters suggest could be several more days of active weather.
