At Least 11 Killed in Separate Road Crashes Across Italy, Argentina, Brazil and Iran

Fatal collisions involving motorcycles, a police vehicle and a truck occurred within hours, leaving communities on four continents in mourning and multiple investigations open.

At least eleven people died and several others were injured, some critically, in a series of unrelated road collisions that occurred across four countries between Thursday night and Friday morning. The incidents, reported by local authorities in Italy, Argentina, Brazil and Iran, involved motorcycles, private vehicles, a police patrol car and a heavy truck.

In Syracuse, Sicily, a head-on collision between two motorcycles in the early hours of Friday left a 15-year-old dead and an 18-year-old in intensive care, according to Italian police. A third young person was also injured. In the Argentine province of Salta, a 14-year-old girl succumbed to injuries on Thursday after spending nearly six days in hospital; she had been a passenger on a motorcycle struck by a pickup truck on 12 June in Joaquín V. González. The driver, a 45-year-old man, allegedly fled the scene but was later arrested, prosecutors said. Witnesses told local media the truck ran a red light, though that detail has not been confirmed by judicial authorities. Separately, in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, a police vehicle from a high-risk unit collided with two motorcycles and a bus on Thursday night, killing a 38-year-old pregnant woman and a 40-year-old man, and leaving an 8-year-old girl in serious condition. Two officers were detained as investigators examine security footage and witness accounts.

In Brazil, a head-on crash between a motorcycle and a car on a highway in São Paulo state caused both vehicles to catch fire early Friday, killing a 26-year-old woman and a 39-year-old man, the Polícia Militar Rodoviária reported. A 27-year-old woman sustained minor injuries. In north-eastern Iran, a truck collided with two passenger cars on the Mashhad–Nishapur freeway on Friday morning, resulting in five fatalities and one injury, according to the traffic police. The force’s information centre stated that an initial assessment pointed to the truck driver’s failure to pay attention to the road ahead as the cause.

Across the incidents, several key circumstances remain under investigation. In the Argentine police-involved crash, authorities have not yet determined the precise sequence of manoeuvres that led to the multiple impacts. In the Salta case, prosecutors are expected to upgrade charges against the detained driver following the girl’s death, while the role of other occupants allegedly in the truck at the time has not been officially addressed. The causes of the Italian and Brazilian collisions are still being examined by accident-reconstruction teams. No further updates on the conditions of the injured were immediately available. The provisional death toll from the four separate events stands at eleven.
