The Daily Calls That Stopped: Tay Keith, Architect of Memphis Sound, Dies at 29

The Grammy-nominated producer behind 'Sicko Mode' and 'Nonstop' was found dead in his Nashville apartment during a welfare check, leaving collaborators and a city in mourning.

On Instagram, a screenshot of a call log told the story before any official statement could. BlocBoy JB, the Memphis rapper whose career was forged in teenage beat-making sessions with Tay Keith, posted the image hours after the news broke: a list of recent calls, every day, until the day they stopped. “We talked everyday,” he wrote. “Yeen tell me you was leaving.” The post was a raw, public expression of grief that rippled across the hip-hop world on Thursday, after police in Nashville confirmed that Brytavious Lakeith Chambers—known to millions as the Grammy-nominated producer Tay Keith—had been found dead in his Martin Street apartment. Officers had arrived for a welfare check, prompted by concern from someone who knew him. No foul play is suspected, the Metro Nashville Police Department said; the cause of death awaits an autopsy.

Keith was 29, a son of South Memphis who began making beats at 14 and never really left his city behind, even as his sound travelled the globe. He met BlocBoy JB around that same age, and the two started a creative partnership that would eventually pull the darker, bass-heavy textures of Memphis rap into the mainstream. After early work with Blac Youngsta, the breakthrough came in 2018 with “Look Alive,” a BlocBoy JB track featuring Drake that peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, Keith graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a bachelor’s degree—an achievement he would later describe as one of his proudest, a counter-narrative to the idea that success in music required abandoning formal education.

What followed was a run of productions that defined a commercial era. He co-produced Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode,” a shape-shifting anthem that topped the US charts and earned Keith his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song in 2019. He shaped Drake’s “Nonstop,” Eminem’s “Not Alike,” and Beyoncé’s “Before I Let Go,” a bonus track from her “Homecoming” live album. A second Grammy nomination arrived in 2024 for “Rich Flex” by Drake and 21 Savage. According to Billboard, Keith accumulated 11 top-10 Hot 100 hits and four No. 1 singles; the magazine named him one of the best producers of the 21st century. In 2024, he and his manager Cambrian Strong appeared on the Forbes 30 Under 30 Music list. Yet Keith remained anchored in Tennessee, founding DRUMATIZED, a Nashville studio and creative hub designed to support emerging talent, and he continued to work with younger artists, producing Sexyy Red’s breakout hit “Pound Town” in 2023.

The tributes that followed his death were not only from stars but from the city that shaped him. Memphis mayor Paul Young posted a photograph of himself with Keith on Facebook, writing simply, “Rest in peace, Tay Keith.” Fellow Memphis producer Hitkidd, who had known Keith since 2010, said on Instagram: “I ain’t even got the words.” Across social media, the shock was compounded by the absence of an explanation—the death remains unclassified, a void where a narrative should be. The call log BlocBoy JB shared remains the most intimate artefact of the loss: a record of daily conversations between two friends who built a sound together, now cut short, the last entry unanswered.
